Theoretical Foundations
- Yin-Yang and the Five Elements: Yin and Yang represent the dualistic nature of things, including movement and stillness, hardness and softness. The Five Elements—metal, wood, water, fire, and earth—symbolize different material forms and their operational laws in nature. There exist relationships of mutual generation (e.g., wood generates fire, fire generates earth) and mutual restriction (e.g., wood restricts earth, earth restricts water) among the Five Elements. Their combinations and transformations constitute all things in the universe and exert an influence on human destiny.
- Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches: There are ten Heavenly Stems: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, and Gui; and twelve Earthly Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai. By analyzing the prosperity and decline of the Five Elements in the Bazi, the mutual generation and restriction relationships between the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, and the combinations of the Ten Gods (such as Zheng Guan, Pian Guan, etc.), it predicts a person’s fortune in aspects like personality, career, wealth, and marriage.
- Zi Wei Dou Shu (Purple Star Astrology): Based on the stars in the sky, it maps the twelve palaces to different aspects of life, such as the Life Palace, Wealth Palace, and Career Palace. By analyzing the distribution and movement of stars in each palace, combined with factors like the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, it calculates a person’s destiny and predicts aspects including personality, career development, and interpersonal relationships.
- Qi Men Dun Jia: It is a relatively complex numerological method that takes the Eight Trigrams and Nine Palaces as its framework, integrating elements such as the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, Eight Gates (Xiu Men, Sheng Men, etc.), Nine Stars (Tian Peng Xing, Tian Ren Xing, etc.), and Shen Sha (auspicious and inauspicious spirits). - Destiny is Shaped by the Heart, Bearing Karmic Consequences: Taoism holds that destiny is jointly determined by innate endowment and acquired behavior. It advocates the idea that “my destiny lies in my own hands, not in the will of heaven,” emphasizing that one can alter the trajectory of destiny, accumulate blessings, and enhance life fortune through cultivation, doing good deeds, and abiding by moral norms.
- Opposition to Fatalism: Orthodox Taoism opposes regarding numerological predictions as absolute fatalistic arrangements. It believes that humans possess subjective initiative and should grasp and change their destiny by cultivating their minds, improving themselves, and achieving harmony with nature, rather than passively accepting the dictates of destiny.

- Marriage Matching: By analyzing the Bazi of both parties, examining whether the Five Elements are mutually generating or restricting, and whether the relationship between the Ten Gods is harmonious, it judges the compatibility of the marriage and potential problems, providing a reference for marriage selection and management.
- Career Planning: According to the Five Elements attributes and pattern characteristics in the Bazi, it determines suitable industries and occupations. For example, a person with a strong wood element in their Bazi may be suitable for industries related to plants and wood; those with a strong metal element may be suitable for metal processing, finance, etc.
- Health Prediction: Based on the corresponding relationship between the Five Elements and human zang-fu organs, it analyzes the balance of the Five Elements in the Bazi to predict potential health issues. For instance, if the fire element is overly strong in the Bazi, one may need to pay attention to the health of the heart and blood; if the water element is weak, the kidneys may be prone to discomfort.
- Fortune Analysis: By analyzing the interaction between the Great Fortune, fleeting years, and the Bazi chart, it predicts the ups and downs of fortune in different stages. The Great Fortune changes every ten years, and fleeting years refer to the fortune of each year, which can determine when it is favorable for career development and when it is necessary to guard against risks.
However, Taoist numerology has not been scientifically verified. It is more of a cultural phenomenon and a manifestation of traditional philosophical thoughts. It should be viewed rationally, taken as a reference for understanding oneself and life, rather than an absolute guide to destiny, so as to avoid falling into the trap of superstition.
