Steps of the Peace Prayer Rituals
- Fasting and bathing serve to purify both mind and body, preparing for the ritual. This step is indispensable before the ceremony, as it ensures the Taoist priest can communicate with deities in the purest state.
- Setting up the altar involves arranging offerings such as fresh flowers, fruits, three types of tea, four kinds of wine, three meat dishes, four vegetarian dishes, incense, candles, clear water, and sesame oil. Additionally, items like yellow paper and yuanbao (gold ingots) must be prepared to demonstrate reverence.
- Ascending the altar to conduct the ritual, the Taoist priest performs a series of ceremonies on the altar, including purifying the altar, striking the command to summon divine generals, treading the celestial gang and stepping the Big Dipper, beating drums and striking chimes, and presenting memorials to the heavens. These steps aim to establish a connection with deities and convey people’s aspirations.
- Reciting scriptures and burning memorials: During the ritual, numerous sutras and repentance texts are chanted. These are vital means for people to express respect and wishes to deities, and also facilitate communication between humans and the divine.
- Offering incense and burning tributes: This is the 环节 where offerings and incense are presented to deities of the five directions and five lands, the Three Pure Ones, and the four domains. Through this step, people express their reverence and gratitude to the deities.
- Concluding the ritual and thanking the deities: After the ceremony, people pay their final respects and thanks to the deities. This step marks the successful completion of the entire ritual.
